Thirtieth Draft [Voice]

My mother has arrived in the City. It's something I'm grateful for and something I feel guilty for as well. It adds another layer of normalcy to this place for both me and Alexis. I think it does for Kate as well. However curses like yesterday illustrate to me all the reasons I'm being selfish in being joyful at having her here.

Yesterday was...interesting and cruel. We shouldn't be forced to share our fears like that.

Did everyone make it out relatively alright?

Did you end up in anyone's dangerous dreams?

Because I'm glad you're here. I feel like I should be bemoaning the fact that you're here and in danger.

Not dangerous to me that I remember. It all blurs together. What about you?

[He pauses because he ended up in one of the more unpleasant nightmares that tended to personalize.]

It was just a nightmare. Everything was fine when I woke up.

Bright side, I couldn't be more rested.

You look amazing for it.

That's funny. There's an empty seat at the cafe I'm at and no sign of my son and yet, to him, I look amazing. Do you have some sort of City writer's detail on me?

I caught sight of you this morning when you got coffee? I was already up and working on a new book.

A bestseller, I'm sure.

I wouldn't dare disappoint you by writing anything else.

Atta' boy. Would you like to come down for a break? They have delicious brownies.

Breaks are an integral part of a writer's work. I'll be right there.

His mother is sitting at a table out front, sipping her mimosa. Yes, it's early but with the day before, it called for it.

Castle approaches with a smile. He sits down across the table from her.

"Gorgeous day, isn't it?"

"It is, actually. I was surprised. But, this place isn't half bad. I didn't care for the dream-walking but what can you do? We didn't choose to be here. And the brownies..." And yes, she's sliding you a brownie, Richard.

"it's got some good points."

Castle takes the brownie and orders some coffee when a waitress comes around. Once she leaves, Castle looks to his mother.

"Beckett and I are dating."

There. See. One good point to the City.

This stuns her. She replays what he's said again in her head. "Well, finally," she says, sipping her mimosa. "Back home, you were with Gina. Much better than Gina."

Martha's revelation boggles Castle. Completely. "Why would I be dating Gina? We're divorced. She's my publicist."

"Well, Richard, you decided to take the Summer in the Hamptons to write Naked Heat and Gina went with you to make sure wrote. You returned and you two were -- involved again." She sighs. "But, you make your own decisions."

"Why?" More wtfing at Martha. "I left Kate in New York City..." He shakes his head. "It doesn't matter here."

A very long pause. "Don't say anything to Beckett about Gina. She's got enough reservations about dating me here without knowing what's going on in our world."

"You -" she tries, thinking about that. "I don't know why you do why you do. I've only been married five times."

She blinks at that before pulling her gloves off. "Far-be-it for me to meddle in your dalliances." She pauses. "Not that Beckett is a dalliance." Another pause. "She better not be a dalliance, Richard."

"Kate is absolutely not a dalliance."

He takes a sip of his coffee and another bite of the brownie. "Kate's different. She has been since...I first saw her."

I can understand why you'd feel a little selfish at having her here, but at the same time, it has to be a bit of a relief, seeing her again.

It's definitely a relief.

[ooc: Embarrassingly enough I can't remember if they've met or not. /facepalms forever. Which...either way, he needs to 'dad' her.]

I'm glad for you, then.

[ooc: They have actually, but it's been a little while and they don't talk a lot, especially since Menolly thinks his main squeeze is a harpy XD. He can dad her all he likes, but she'll be VERY wary of it because of her past. Bad parenting and all. ^^]

Did you fall victim to some of the nightmares yesterday?

[He's aware the police force is holding her boyfriend in custody but he's not aware of the animosity between Kate and Menolly]

Are you sure you should be asking for that? It's dealing with other people's dreams and such. Isn't that a bit personal of a subject?

Stories would be changed to protect the innocent and of course it'd all be on a voluntary basis.

I ended up in someone else's dream. he was torturing people and had a field day trying to do the same to me. Nothing physical or anything. Mental was enough.

I'm going to assume, because it's the City, that mental is more your idea of real nightmare than physical.

I would rather deal with physical pain than mental. This City has hurt me more than I'd like to admit, but... yesterday was hard, seeing him like that. Hearing the things he said. I know it was just a dream, but my Master says dreams are the mind's way of saying what they really mean without wasting time with the mouth.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with your master, no disrespect intended. I think it's just the subconscious; it's the things you worry about; the things that you have guilt over from the past. That sort of thing.

Kate? [He's pretty sure he's in trouble. he just doesn't know what for yet]

Any chance you're anywhere near the precinct?

[She's smiling just a little, because he's obviously ready for a reaming.]

I could swing by. Something up?

No, no it's fine. I'll be home soon anyway, just wondering.

Alright, I'll see you in a little while.

[Of course now he's heading that way]

My mother? Who do you think taught me?

Then I should definitely meet her!

I'm sure you will. I'll either introduce you two or you'll likely run into her.

My mother. She's a broadway actress.

No doubt she's a pistol.

She's living with us, right???

The guest room is now property of one Martha Rogers. She'll probably be doing some re-decorating to the apartment.
