This is an interesting turn of events. I—uhm—I’m Rick Castle. You might have heard of me before. I am a best selling novelist. You might even recognize me from the ruggedly handsome photo on the back of my books. I’m also a consultant with the NYPD and my partner…she’s going to be mighty upset when she finds out I’ve been kidnapped…

[He pauses again, considering the situation]

Beckett? If this a prank it’s not a very good one.

Yeah at the same time, I feel like worst father of the year because I'm glad she's not here. Especially with some of the things I've been reading about this place.

You'd think so, but people tend to be put off by it. That is if they don't write me off as crazy for saying I'm a wizard.

No, that I can understand. This place can be horrible. I think the fact that you're glad your daughter won't have to go through those things is a good thing.

I consult with the police force and run a small magic shop. I also make a lot of pancakes.

She's a sweet kid. If she's not missing me or needing me, I'd rather her be safe.

Yeah? I'm going to try and get on the police force consulting. It's part of what I did at home. Pancakes? And magic shops? I guess if there are wizards then there have to be magic shops.

Granted, for the people that know magic is real, they generally give me a wide berth.

I just have a cat back home that's probably glad I stopped taking up so much space.

My roommates really like pancakes. Mostly the magic shop thing is an excuse to sit around and read all day while calling it work.

I'm okay at what I do. I'm good at doing crazy stuff everyone else is too smart to do and making it work.

Either books about magic or mystery novels. Especially old school noir stuff.

I like the old mystery novels too. Not as much about the magic but I like sci fi and things like that.

When I say books about magic I mean more like what people would consider textbooks.
